一、Discipline introduction

    In year 1983, relying on the advantages of fermentation engineering discipline at home and aboard, Jiangnan University took the lead in establishing environmental biotechnology laboratory headed by academician Lun Shiyi with the aim to realize cross-penetrating among biology, environmental science, ecology and engineering, etc., best play multi-disciplinary advantages, devote to use biological means to study and solve regional and national environmental issues. In year 1998, we gained the right of master’s degree conferring in “environmental engineering”, and in year 2003 we gained the right of doctor’s degree conferring in “environmental engineering”. The environmental engineering discipline point of Jiangnan University was recognized as the featured major of Jiangsu Province and national featured major construction point of institutions of higher learning in 2010. We began to enroll postgraduate students in “environmental science and engineering” major as the first level discipline since year 2012. The environmental science and engineering major of Jiangnan University has four independent and common disciplinary directions, including wastes reclamation engineering, water pollution prevention and treatment engineering, lake pollution and rehabilitation and environmental ecology. Waste reclamation engineering mainly relates to research on bioconversion of food fermentation by-products and municipal sewage sludge or extracting of high value-added products. Water pollution prevention and treatment engineering mainly relates to R&D on anaerobic biological treatment technology for organic wastewater of food fermentation industry and ternary combination treatment technology of refractory chemical wastewater. Lake pollution and rehabilitation mainly relates to research on disaster mechanism, treatment and rehabilitation technology of eutrophication of Taihu Lake, and test technology of persistent organic pollutants, etc. The environmental ecology mainly relates to research on ecological effect and toxicity threatened by acid rain, ultraviolet rays and typical environmental factor.

二、 Educational objectives

    We aim to educate specialized senior talents “toward modernization, the world and the future” with all-round development of morality, intelligence and physique.

2、Grasp firm basic principles and systematic professional knowledge of environmental science and engineering major. Have the ability to engage in scientific research, teaching and learning or undertake specialized technical work.

3、Grasp one foreign language, and can read materials written in the related foreign language skillfully. Have certain ability to engage in business of environmental science and engineering major, and have the ability and quality to adapt to work of the similar major.

四、 Duration of study

    2.5 years study system is implemented. The school time of the postgraduate student shall be 2 years at least and 3.5 years at most.

五、Credit requirements and courses offering

    The postgraduate student of this major shall earn at least 28 credits. The total course credits shall not be lower than 25. The credits of degree courses shall not be lower than 11. The credits of academic report shall be 2 and the credits of teaching practice shall be 1.

Remarks: postgraduates enrolled with a different major of the bachelor’s degree or with the same educational level shall make up three main courses of this major (undergraduate courses): Biochemistry, Microbiology and Principles of Chemical Industry with independent credit earned which are not included in the total credit.

六、Education method, examination method and requirements, and requirements for dissertation

七、Dissertation defense and degree conferring 

1. The postgraduate students shall finish required courses study in the education plan and earn required credits with qualified results (among which the average point of professional and degree courses shall be at least 70), finish the dissertation independently under the guidance of the tutor.

2. Requirements of graduation time

 (1) Publish at least one academic paper related with the subject content (excluding summary) on SCI journals with Jiangnan University as the responsible author and the postgraduate as the first author; the postgraduate student may apply graduation in two years. 

（2）Other postgraduate students complying with the following requirements on degree conferring and paper publishing may apply graduation in 2.5 years.

    Publish (including being accepted) at least one academic paper related with the subject content (excluding summary) on CSCD (core version) with Jiangnan University as the responsible author and the postgraduate as the first author

    In case of any of the following situations, it may be regarded as meeting the requirements of paper publishing

①、Publish academic paper related with the dissertation on theoretic section of the newspapers of provincial level or above;

②、Participate in work (more than 20000 words) related with the dissertation and the work has been published;

③、Articles on “China Sciencepaper Online”, with evaluation reference value of 3 stars or above;

④、As the main participants (top 3) to finish project related with the dissertation which passes the identification of provincial level

⑤、Invention patents related with the dissertation (top 3) 

⑥、Win award in national professional competition (top 2)

    Fill out the degree application and apply for dissertation defense to the Postgraduate School

3. After receiving the application for dissertation defense by the postgraduate students, the Postgraduate School shall perform qualification evaluation according to Interim Measures for Implementation Regulations of the People’s Republic of China on Academic Degrees and Working Rules for Master’s Degree Conferring of Jiangnan University. After passing the evaluation, the School will organize dissertation review and defense. Anyone who fails to pass the verification may apply again after three month. All the related work with dissertation review shall be handled by defense secretary according to related regulations in Working Rules for Master’s Degree Conferring of Jiangnan University.

4. After passing the dissertation defense, the Degree Evaluation Sub-committee of the School will organize degree evaluation to make decisions on whether to recommend degree conferring. The Degree Evaluation Committee of the university will make decision on whether to confer the degree based on opinions given by defense committee and Degree Evaluation Sub-committee of the School.

5. If the dissertation defense is failed or degree evaluation is not passed, the student may modify the dissertation within three months to one year and apply for dissertation defense again once approved by the Degree Evaluation Sub-committee of the School 

6. If the paper publishing requirement for degree conferring is not met by the postgraduate student, he/she may apply for dissertation defense, but he/she shall not apply for the degree. If the requirement for paper publishing is met in one year after graduation, application for master’s degree can be made to the School. The School will perform qualification verification and decide whether to organize dissertation defense and degree evaluation.
